Something New!

I have been trying something new, scrimshaw on seashells.  For those of you who don't know what scrimshaw is, it is a form of art that sailors used to do on their time off at sea.  Apparently the name scrimshaw comes from a word that means a "waste of ones time"... The ship captains did not see the value of this art form.  To me it is a very unique and challenging form of art not to mention fun.  Scrimshaw is done by scratching an image into the surface of the shell or bones etc.  Then filling the scratches with India Ink.  Here are the first few that I have done.

Its been awhile!

Hi All,

It has been awhile since my last post!  Lots has happened since then.  Over the course of the winter I have been in a few shows at the Rey Center in Waterville Valley, NH.  Including the show "Elements", Holiday Artisan Fair, and "A White Mountain Winter".  I have also been regularly attending the Danbury Farmers Market the first weekend of every month.  Two more left to go!  I'm gearing up for another great season of art shows and art festivals! I have been working on some commissions, studio works, and a few plein air paintings.  Here are a few paintings I have done over the last few months.
"Bondcliff Ridge"
En plein air Watercolors on hot pressed watercolor paper
This past summer my mom and I topped off our hiking season with a backpacking trip out to the bonds.  It was a wonderful time and the views were unbeatable!  This is a quick watercolor that I did while on our trip.

"Crayons"
Oils on panel
"Marbles"
Oils on Panel
These are the first two pieces from a series that I have started called childhood treasures.

"Barn"
Watercolor on cold pressed watercolor paper.
New England has many old barns like this one.  Old and worn from many long winters.

"Center Harbor Winter"
En plein air watercolor on hot pressed watercolor paper.
While waiting in the car with my puppy there is no better time to work on a sketch or painting.  As is the case with this painting.

"Fort Williams"
En plein air watercolors on hot pressed watercolor paper
This is from our first trip to Fort Williams this year.  It was a beautiful March day.

"Bondcliff Ridge from West Bond"
Watercolors on hot pressed watercolor paper
While dreaming about summer hiking and backpacking I painted this view from our backpacking trip last year.

"Snow"
En plein air oils on canvas panel
We have had plenty of snow this year!  I painted this while out cross country skiing.  There are so many attractive hollows along the trails.

"Nest"
Watercolors on hot pressed watercolor paper.
Spring is coming and I always think of robins as it approaches.

"Seaside Mornings"
Oils on stretched canvas.
Planning on spending some time on the Maine coast this summer.  I always enjoy watching the birds come at dawn with all their tunes to sing.  This is one of my favorites, the Song Sparrow.
